Keep your scissors (and timing) safe!

I have been called out a half-dozen times in the last year or so to reset timing after a longarmer left scissors on the quilt and stitched over them breaking the needle, knocking the timing off, and ruining a great quilting session.

A quick and easy fix is to put a magnet on the front of your machine - readily available with double-stick tape to attach and in seconds you will be ready to make sure your scissors are attached before you press the “GO” button.

The picture below is from one of my wife’s machines, a Handi Quilter Avante, but most if not all brands have enough space on the front for a 1-inch circular magnet.

In case you are worried there is no worry about the magnet bothering any of the electronics in the machine - in fact several machines such as the BabyLock Regalia, Handi Quilter Forte, and Handi Quilter Amara have magnets on the front side installed by the manufacturer. My career before longarm tech stuff was Broadband Engineering and Operations and safe magnetic practices were part of our routine.

You can get magnets at hobby shops or hardware stores, but this particular one came from a very small business known as Amazon - $10 for six - buy and share with 5 friends and you each have a scissor mount for less than $2.

Now if only a safety feature could be developed so the machine couldn’t start unless the scissors were in place….

Quilt on!
